Google Ads AI Max: Why Daily Oversight Matters for Home Service Businesses
An insulation contractor wants homeowners who need insulation. An HVAC company wants calls from people who need repairs or a new system. That sounds straightforward. But as Google expands how it matches ads to searches, keeping those campaigns focused takes ongoing attention.
At Media Genie, we’ve noticed more irrelevant search terms surfacing since AI Max implementation. That’s an observation from the accounts we manage, rather than a claim that every advertiser is experiencing the same thing. It’s also why daily oversight remains a priority for us.
When you’re paying for every click, the searches behind those clicks matter.
What Has Changed With AI Max?
Google’s AI Max adds automation to existing Search campaigns. Its search term matching can reach beyond your selected keywords using broad match and technology that finds searches based on your ads and website content. AI Max also includes options for customized ad text and expanded landing page selection.
The opportunity is understandable. A homeowner may need your service without using the exact wording in your keyword list. Finding that person can bring in business you otherwise would have missed.
The challenge is deciding how far that expansion should go.
A search can relate to insulation without coming from someone looking to hire an insulation contractor. Someone researching materials for a school project has a very different need from a homeowner ready to schedule an estimate.
Both searches may mention insulation. Only one fits the purpose of that campaign.
Why We Review Search Terms Daily
Keywords are what advertisers select. Search terms are what people actually type before an ad appears.
That difference is where we spend a lot of time.
Our daily search term reviews help us spot searches that don’t fit a client’s services or customer base. Depending on the business, those might involve employment, training, equipment rentals, DIY supplies, or services the company doesn’t offer.
We add appropriate negative keywords to help block unwanted searches going forward. These exclusions continue to apply when AI Max is enabled.
We’re careful with those exclusions, too. Blocking a word too broadly can cut off valuable searches along with the unwanted ones. A homeowner asking about insulation costs, for example, may be a strong prospect even if they aren’t ready to book that minute.
Daily oversight means making those distinctions, rather than simply making the negative keyword list longer.
More Traffic Has to Earn Its Place
A busier campaign doesn’t automatically mean a healthier business.
If clicks increase while qualified calls decline, we need to investigate. If reported conversions rise but the client is hearing from people asking for unrelated services, that deserves attention as well.
AI Max reporting helps advertisers review the searches and landing pages behind campaign performance. Lead quality, conversion tracking, service areas, and campaign settings help explain the rest.
AI Max also provides controls for search expansion, brands, and landing pages. Those settings give advertisers ways to adjust where automation has room to work.
Our Clients’ Budgets Deserve Attention
For a home service business, wasted advertising spend has a real cost. It’s money that could have helped reach another homeowner with a job the company actually wants.
We see value in using AI to discover opportunities. We also see the need to check its decisions against what our clients do every day.
That’s why Media Genie continues reviewing search activity daily, tightening exclusions where needed, and watching whether traffic is turning into worthwhile inquiries.
